ARTE ES BELLEZA (2002)

“Tuve un accidente de ciclismo en una avenida del centro de la ciudad de Santiago. Como era feriado y las calles estaban vacÌas tuve que hacer parar un taxi para llegar a la sala de urgencias del hospital público mas cercano. Me había azotado un lado de la cara contra el canto de la cuneta y todo el peso de mi cuerpo y la bicicleta habían caído sobre mi mano derecha, produciéndose una luxación en los nudillos. Al ingresar a urgencias, luego de enyesarme, me llevaron tras un biombo para ser entrevistada por una asistente social, quien, junto con el médico, insistía en que yo dejara constancia de que había sido golpeada por mi conviviente. No pude salir hasta comprobar que era la primera vez a acudía a urgencias por una lesión de ese tipo.”

Serie de autoretratos, emulando publicidad de cosméticos L’Oreal. El texto es una apropiación literal obtenido de dos gigantografías publicitarias de L’Oreal, una de las cuales cubre el frontis del Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, el reverso del MAC, al momento de la muestra.La obra emplazada en la fachada del Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, antigua escuela de Bellas Artes de la Universidad de Chile, produce un efecto de espejo en relación al cartel publicitario que cubre el frontis del Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes.

Composition of self-portraits. The piece appropiates an advertisement of L´Oreal cosmetics where supermodels pose along with the slogan “Art is beauty”.

Art is beauty is mounted on the facade of the Contemporary Art Museum of Chile, located in the back of the National Fine Arts Museum. The advertisement covers the entire facade of the National Fine Arts Museum because the cosmetics company is funding a restoration of the building at the time. Both (the L'Oreal advertisement and Arte es belleza) are exhibited at the same time. The self portraits refer to the distance between the image of the supermodel and the reality of chilean women. It also refers to the condition of the Contemporary Arts Museum which, as opposed to the Fine Arts Museum, is constantly undergoing crisis.

The piece was exhibited in the context of an exhibition which intended to portray an emerging generation of chilean artists. While the polichromatic image (blown out of proportion, tampered with) makes up or disguises the cracks on the deteriorated museum, the institution insists on exhibiting the fragile cosmetic relationship between the recent local production and the run down academy.
